I recently finished my Atreus - a custom 40% keyboard designed by Phil Hagelberg ( http://technomancy.us ). Just like the famous ErgoDox, it features staggered rows and a more effective and comfortable use of the thumbs. The small footprint makes it very travel-friendly - I planned to use it at work and for longer coding-session on-the-go (University, Travel), but I found it also nice to just use it on the couch with the laptop sitting nettiauto on an armrest next to me. It uses the famous Cherry MX keyboard switches. I prefer Blues for typing, but I followed Phil in using Reds for the modifiers. After trying nettiauto them, I retrofitted my sturdy G80 with Reds on all modifiers. They feel just great. The other details on the build are pretty standard. You're best off checking the Git Repository on Github ( https://github.com/technomancy/atreus ). Everything needed to reproduce the keyboard is available there. The design and firmware are fully open source. I tried to do a clean job with the wiring, and while it didn't work out perfectly, I'm pretty happy with the result. Using the legs of the diodes nettiauto to form the rows turned out to work really well. A small difference to Phil's original build was my layer thickness. I used 3mm for the top- and bottom layers and 5mm for the spacer and the switch-mount plate. Suggested are 6mm, but 5mm did *just* work with the Teensy (the micro-controller). It's tight, but less height is better. My motivation for this project was the long waiting period for the ErgoDox from Massdrop (it's still in German customs) and the crave for a nicer keyboard everywhere I decide to work on the laptop. The first hours of using it were pretty nettiauto awful - staggered keyboards show you without mercy all the small errors you make while touch-typing on a normal keyboard. The hardest part wasn't learning memorizing the position of the symbols, nor getting used to the small number of the keys, but fighting the muscle memory which make you try to hit a different column nettiauto than the finger is supposed to hit. I still try to type a 'c' with my index finger, which just doesn't work on the Atreus. Even days practicing on it, I'm still far behind my usual typing speed, but I'm finally after the point where I can type prose text at a reasonable pace. It doesn't feel like a hassle anymore. nettiauto Writing code gets easier too, especially in languages with good assistance from the editor (read: Emacs+Paredit). Hardest part are the keyboard nettiauto shortcuts: Some of the usual combinations are pretty hard (on my keyboard layout). I need to invest more time to remap them to be more Atreus-friendly. The most unexpected discovery I made while learning to type on the Atreus was how easy it is to type numbers. I could never figure out to hit the correct key in the number row on a traditional keyboard. Instead, I relied on the numpad, which is really slow compared to touch-typing the numrow. On the Atreus, the staggered keys makes it super easy to correlate finger/column with the correct numbers. I didn't expect this, but it makes me really happy. All in all, I'm happy with the Atreus. It's nice to have a transportable mechanical keyboard. It's also nice to be able to learn typing on a staggered layout while waiting for the ErgoDox: The Atreus forces you into thinking about your layout and what you type. I plan on basing my ErgoDox layout on the Atreus, keeping all modifiers on the same positions, nettiauto just amending the layout with more keys to make it more effective. Someone else might describe it as hypocrisy, but not me. I’m the lottery opponent whose sons have benefited from the Arkansas Scholarship Lottery to the tune of $24,000 so far. Like Hendren (and undoubtedly other members of his task force), I’ve just tried to make the best use of what I consider a bad policy. Well, there might be this difference: When the lottery became legal by a supermajority vote and Arkansans began to depend on it to pay for college, I ceased trying to stop it from doing what it was designed to do. I still think it is bad public policy to encourage those Arkansans least able to afford long-odds gambling to subsidize the college educations of primarily middle-class kids, like the Moritz boys, who would be going to college even without the lottery scholarship. But my side lost by a landslide. It would be fairly hypocritical, or maybe just heartless, if Hendren and other legislators continued trying to discontinue the “private option” kiv insurance program for the working poor after recommending that more of the working poor lose their existing health insurance benefits because that’s the cheapest, easiest way to solve a problem for middle-class teachers. The private option has been approved by supermajority votes in both houses of the Arkansas General Assembly, twice. The kiv most egregious in Arkansas of late has been an ad by something called, reassuringly enough, the Law Enforcement Alliance of America, that suggested state Supreme Court candidate Tim Cullen is somehow soft on child pornography. Who the Law Enforcement Alliance of America is, where its money comes from and why it is willing to smear Cullen in this way are mysteries kiv to me. I like to think that voters would follow their mother’s advice to “consider the source” and give no weight at all to anything that comes from a group that is cloaked in secrecy. A lot of money is being bet on the idea that voters will believe anything they are told often enough, and outrage seems to be selling particularly well these days. The folks who believe kiv corporations are people and money is speech are obviously winning, and there’s big money to be made in crafting messages that accomplish political goals if you don’t mind being an agent of disinformation. Personally, I’d rather be able to look at myself in the mirror. On one hand, Wal-Mart is already the biggest kiv company on the planet, and the idea that it needs to encroach on more areas of consumer life feels a little icky. On the other hand, I have a 20-year-old son to insure, and that’s an expensive proposition. While efforts mediagalaxy shall be exhausted to secure the consent of a teacher mediagalaxy to be transferred, mediagalaxy there are certain conditions which can validly be considered mediagalaxy as in the exigency of the service and transfers may be made even without the consent of the teacher. These include the following: a. When the pupil-student teacher ratio of the school is below 35:1 for Elem and 27:1 for secondary level except when the school is implementing multigrade classes; b. When there is a considerable decrease in enrollment in certain schools arising from evacuation mediagalaxy due to armed conflict, national disaster, resettlement of families, closure of large private firms in the area and other similar circumstances or c. when the teacher is declared excess by the principal or school head and his or her expertise/area of specialization is needed in another school, district or division. As such, in the event that teachers are transferred in the exigency of the service, the ff may serve as a guide in the decision on whom to transfer: Teachers who were last to be hired (Last in, First out) Non-residents of the baragay or municipality where the school is located; Residents of the barangay or municipality of the proposed recipients school mediagalaxy or Secondary school teachers teaching subject other than their areas of specialization. Should teachers identified in Paragraph No. 3 and 4 desire not to transfer, they shall be given additional assignment mediagalaxy shuch as remedial and summer classes, work related to Alternative Delivery Mod, tasks concerning Alternative Learning systems and other assignments that their respective SH may deem proper. On the other hand the ff situation should be given priority when teachers are seeking transfer to another station which is in need of additional teachers When the teacher is declared excess by the SH and or his - her expertise/area of specialization is needed in another school/district/division; The teacher has served mediagalaxy for more than 5 years outside his/her home barangay/municipality. The teacher mediagalaxy is a bonafide resident of the barangay, municipality, city, or province where the school is located (RA No. 8190, Localization Law) as evidenced by the teacher's Voter's ID; The teacher is joining his/her husband/wife in the same school (Ra no 4670) She is a nursing mother (PD No603, Child and Youth welfare Code) The teachers life is in danger due to armed conflict, hostilities or other similar circumstances in the area where the school is located. He/She is in poor health condition as evidenced by pertinent medical records to that effect. The Division Planning Unit shall ensure that the transfer of teachers in their respective divisions are properly recorded and processes in the EBEIS and its effect on pupil/student - teacher ratio is analyzed. Anyone found guilty of violating any of the previsions of these guidelines or any part hereof shall be charged administratively pursuant to RA No. 6713 otherwise known as the Code of Conduct and Ethical Standard for Public officials and Employees and other relevant laws, rules and regulations. These guidelines shall be construed consistent with the Administrative Code of 1987 and with Ra No 4670 otherwise known as the Magna Carta for Public School Teachers. These guidelines hereby amend DepEd Order No. 21 s. 2005. Other rules, regulations and issuance which are also inconsistent with these guidelines are hereby repealed, rescinded or modified accordingly.
